Andrew Desjardins was born on November 8th 1975, grew up in the Conway, NH area, and was a Lakers hockey player throughout his youth along with his brother Douglas. They attended New Hampton School and continued their hockey experience there. Andrew was a victim of Cystic Fibrosis, but he continued to play, coach and referee hockey throughout his older years, despite receiving two double lung transplants and a liver transplant. Andrew fought a life long battle with Cystic Fibrosis, but he met his health challenges head on with a positive attitude. His life long passion was hockey, both as a player and coach. One of his proudest achievements was capturing a league hockey championship as his team's Captain just months after receiving both a double lung and liver transplant. His quick wit and engaging grin always brought smiles to his large circle of friends. His love of God, his family, and his genuine caring for others were his greatest attributes. Andrew was living proof that even the deadliest of diseases need not consume you. He believed in living each day to the fullest; his attitude and energy served as an inspiration to many.
Andrew Desjardins passed away on 2/17/2014 at the age of 38. Andrew’s mom and dad have asked LRYHA to set up a fund in his name, share his story and donate a portion of the fund with a Laker youth hockey player. The Board and Andrew’s folks hope to make this an annual award. They know their son would be pleased with this sort of memorial.
Below is a link to an inspiring short video that shares Andrew’s story and his passion for the sport. We invite each Laker to watch the video and then submit an essay in 300 words or less about how the video touched them. Some ideas include what obstacle have you had to overcome in your life, how do you wish to give back someday, or what does perseverance and determination mean to you? Hockey was Andrew’s passion – what is yours?
For anyone wishing to donate to the fund for future seasons, please make checks payable to LRYHA with a memo noting “Andrew’s Fund” and mail to P.O. Box 762, Laconia, NH 03247.
